I practice micro-vascular reconstructive surgery. My job is
to take tissues from one area and move them to another area to
reconstruct defects caused by trauma, cancer or birth defects.
Micro-vascular refers to the tiny blood vessels that need to be sewn
together under the microscope. Reconstructive surgery is state of the
art and ecologically sound since it is about using the patients' own
tissues! The surgery can be quite time and labour intensive but is
immensely satisfying and entirely natural.
What is your approach?
I empower my patients. I tell them all they need to know and
guide them to the best possible decision for themselves at that time in
their lives. It’s about the patient’s needs and resources. I trust my
patients and find that people invariably make the wisest decision for
themselves. Once they have made a decision I will support them fully and
do my best to fulfil their surgical expectations. For me, surgery has
to be a partnership between patient and doctor; we’re both in it
together!
What does it involve?
Reconstructive surgery is a big undertaking, it involves
commitment and time from both patient and doctor. It may involve several
days in hospital, requiring specialist nursing and intensive monitoring
after surgery. However if the patient wants the very best, then
reconstruction using their own tissue delivers the highest quality
results that last a lifetime.
What can you reconstruct?
Most things. I specialise in breast reconstruction using
tissue from the abdomen, bottom or thigh. I also reconstruct limbs
following traffic accidents, infections or burns. I have a large experienced in
head and neck reconstruction using bones or soft tissues from the limbs.
Increasingly I'm involved in gynaecological reconstruction following
cancer surgery - I find reconstruction the most incredibly worthwhile and fulfilling part of my job.
Do you do it alone?
Certainly not! Reconstructive surgery demands a team approach, with skilled and interested specialists, all focused on doing the
job they love to the best of their ability. I see it as a total fusion of
science, skill and art.
