How do you differ from other surgeons?
Breast surgery is my specialist interest. I aim to be the best breast reconstruction surgeon possible. This means I have studied the subject extensively, written papers, book chapters and presented on the subject nationally and internationally. In 2004 I won the ‘Stephen Kroll scholarship’ to exclusively study breast reconstruction surgery in Belgium. In 2006 I was awarded an international fellowship to study microvascular surgery and head and neck reconstruction in Taiwan for one year. I now work as a specialist breast reconstruction consultant in the NHS. So I’d say I’ve gone the extra mile, done a lot of additional training and performed many complex surgeries which have given me the edge and a world class experience. What is your approach to breast surgery?
I enjoy what I do and I like to enjoy my patients. I aim to make the whole process worry-free and maybe even fun! I try to get my patients to express what they really want. I do a lot of complex breast reconstruction after cancer, or radiotherapy or in people with congenital (birth) abnormalities of the breasts. I’ve also done a lot of male breast work since men are often as self-conscious as women regarding their appearance; a manly chest is very significant in the male psyche. I take great pride and pleasure in helping people achieve their best physical shape. Breast surgery is a real art and there are so many physical, social, sexual and psychological meanings associated with breasts. It's a pleasure to achieve a natural and beautiful looking chest for someone. How up-to-date is your practice?
I often offer breast augmentation as a day case procedure, so the patient can recuperate at home. I don’t routinely use drains, this minimises scars and discomfort. I practice single scar breast reductions in appropriate cases, so again that minimises scars and complications. Complex procedures such as augmentation mastopexy may be done as a combined single procedure rather than two.I practice plenty of innovative breast reconstruction methods with a variety of perforator flap techniques as well as pedicled muscle flaps and implant based reconstructions.
